The Vintage Yellow Bronze Openwork Sacred Heart Medal is built around a single image. The Sacred Heart sits at the centre with the crown of thorns drawn tight around it, a small cross and rising flames above, and a burst of fine rays behind, while a border of curling leaves and scrolls opens the whole piece to the light.
The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus rests on a simple idea, that the love of Christ can be pictured and returned. The thorns are what that love cost, the flames its ardour, the rays its overflow. Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque received the promises attached to the devotion at Paray-le-Monial in the seventeenth century, and Catholics have worn the image since as a pledge of mercy for themselves and their homes. Nothing on this medal is lettered; the relief makes the whole statement.
The Sacred Heart pendant was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
