The Vintage Yellow Bronze La Leche Ornament Medal shows Our Lady of La Leche, the Blessed Mother nursing the Infant Jesus. She bends low over him, veiled, one arm drawn around his body while he lies across her lap with his head at her breast. The relief is cut deep, and the fall of her veil and sleeve is modelled with real feeling.
Our Lady of La Leche — Nuestra Señora de la Leche y Buen Parto, Our Lady of the Milk and Happy Delivery — is the title mothers have turned to for centuries: expectant mothers, nursing mothers, and couples hoping for a child. Spanish settlers carried the devotion to St. Augustine, Florida in the early seventeenth century, and the shrine there remains the oldest Marian shrine in the United States. It is among the most domestic images in Catholic art, showing Mary not enthroned or crowned but simply feeding her son.
