The Vintage Yellow Bronze Christening Crucifix with Leafy Ends is the smallest kind of crucifix, the sort given at a baptism and kept for a lifetime in the box with the certificate. Every terminal breaks into a scrolled leaf, and a foliate crest rises above the head of Christ, so a great deal of ornament is gathered into a very small compass. The corpus is slight and simply cut.
Set into the crest is a small scroll lettered INRI, for Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. Pilate ordered the words fixed above the cross as a charge against a condemned man, and the Church has carried them ever since as a title. On a christening piece they read as a first profession of faith made on a child's behalf, to be grown into over a lifetime. The warm yellow bronze suits a godparent's gift.
This christening crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the crucifix's vintage character.
