The Vintage White Bronze Spanish Crucifix with Shell Crest runs nearly three inches and has the reach of a wall piece, though it is balanced enough to be worn comfortably. The arms are flat and plain and the shaft tapers to the foot, which leaves all the ornament in one place: a broad shell opening behind the head of Christ, its surface divided into small panels with a lattice worked inside them.
The corpus is fully modelled and unsparing, the head fallen to the right, the ribs drawn, the loincloth knotted at the hip. Spanish crucifixes have always been the frankest in the Catholic world about what happened on the cross, and that honesty, more than any ornament, is what carried them from Spain through the Americas and the Philippines.
