A veiled nun in a heavy habit stands half-length on the Vintage White Bronze Saint Teresa of Avila Medal, turned to one side with her hands drawn in against her, an open book at her left and a smaller form at her right. The ground around her is granulated and rough, cut so that the smooth folds of the habit read clearly against it, and the whole design is worked with a bold, unfussy hand.
The legend around the upper rim reads SANCTA TERESA, Saint Teresa. Teresa of Ávila reformed the Carmelite order in sixteenth-century Spain, founding convent after convent on foot and on almost nothing, and wrote of prayer with a directness that has kept her books in print for four hundred years. The open book beside her is her constant attribute, and the Church numbers her among its Doctors. The rough field and heavy lettering mark the antique original as Spanish.
