The Vintage White Bronze Celtic Knotwork Crucifix opens almost every part of the cross into pierced interlace. Bands cross over and under one another through the arms and the head in the Celtic manner, spirals scroll through the foot, and the slender corpus stands clear against all that open ground.
Knotwork of this kind comes out of the Irish and Northumbrian tradition of manuscript and metalwork, where the endless interlacing line was read as eternity, a path with no beginning and no end worked around the figure of the one who has neither. Nothing is lettered on the piece; the pattern itself is the argument. An antiqued finish settles into the crossings and brings the weave forward, and for a large crucifix it stays surprisingly light in the hand.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
