The Vintage Sterling Silver Seven Sorrows Medal is an oval worked on both faces. The front shows the Virgin veiled and haloed, her hands folded low and her face drawn, with seven swords driven fanwise into a small flaming heart at her breast. The reverse turns to the Crucifixion, Christ on the cross with two mourning figures fallen at its foot, worked in fine detail for so small a field.
The Latin legends answer one another. MATER DOLOROSA, Mother of Sorrows, names the seven griefs foretold when Simeon told her that a sword would pierce her own soul, from the flight into Egypt to the burial of her Son. IN CRUCE SALUS, in the Cross is salvation, is the reply given on the other face, the reason none of that sorrow was wasted. Worn together they make the medal a meditation rather than a single image.
The medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA in sterling silver, using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
