The Vintage Sterling Silver Scrollwork Center, Jesus and Mary sets two profile heads side by side, one just behind the other, inside a pierced cartouche of C-scrolls and ribbon work. The forward head is veiled; the second rises close behind it. A scrolled hood arches over the top, and the metal is cut away down both sides so the design floats free of its frame.
Paired profiles are the long-standing way of showing the Son and his Mother together on rosary fittings, and European workshops used the arrangement throughout the nineteenth century. Shown this way, rather than back to back, the eye takes in both at once, which is close to what the Rosary itself does, contemplating the mysteries of Christ through the heart of Mary. There is no lettering; the whole effect is carried by the cut of the scrollwork in sterling silver.
