Product Details

The arms of the Vintage Bronze Wood Grain Flared and Beaded Crucifix flare outward to bevelled ends and are edged all around with fine beading. Their faces are cut in a close wood grain, so that the metal imitates a timber cross, and a broad halo of rays stands behind the head of the corpus. Above it a scrolled ribbon carries the letters INRI.

The abbreviation is for Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews, the charge Pilate wrote out in Hebrew, Latin and Greek and had fastened above the head of Christ. Casting wood grain into metal is an old conceit of devotional workshops and a pointed one: it keeps the cross what it actually was, two rough beams, at the same moment that the beading and the halo of rays make it a jewel. That double reading, execution and glory held in one object, is the whole of Christian art about the cross, and here it is worked into two inches of bronze.

The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.

  • Made in the USA
  • Artisan-cast from an antique original
  • Finished by hand, so every piece is subtly unique.
  • Buy the medal alone, or add an optional chain or cord necklace
  • Add a cord or chain to have it arrive assembled and ready to wear
  • Arrives in a deluxe velour jewelry box
