The Vintage Bronze Wheat Crucifix wears its ornament as doctrine. Ears of ripe wheat are laid along the upper shaft and the foot and spring from behind the side arms, and the arm ends are cut as blunt blocks like bundled sheaves. A small rayed disc sits behind the head of the corpus, catching the light the way a monstrance does.
Wheat on a crucifix is never decoration. It is the grain that falls into the earth and dies to bear much fruit, and it is the bread of the altar that comes from it, so the cross and the Mass stand in a single image: the death of Christ and the way we receive it. The word FRANCE is cast into the top of the piece, marking the country of the original, and French workshops produced some of the finest devotional modelling of the last century, as the crispness of the grain here shows.
This crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
