Two doves meet breast to breast across the Vintage Bronze Two Doves Rosary Center, their heads coming together at the top around a small almond-shaped opening, wings and tails spread outward to the corners. The plumage is worked in short scalloped strokes over the whole surface, cut by hand rather than by machine, so the birds are near mirrors of one another without being identical.
Paired doves are among the oldest images in Christian art, carved on tomb slabs in the Roman catacombs long before they ever appeared on a rosary. There they stood for souls at peace and for love kept faithful, and the same meaning followed them onto devotional metalwork. The form suits a rosary center particularly well, since the outstretched wings carry the eye naturally out to the strands on either side. The piece is unlettered, and asks for nothing more.
