On the Vintage Bronze Tree and Vine Crucifix the cross is not a beam but a tree. Both arms and the upright are modelled as rough-cut branches, knotted and barked where the limbs were taken off, with small leaves and tendrils breaking out along their length and a further sprig rising at the foot. The corpus hangs from this living wood, slight and quiet against all that texture.
The cross as a tree is one of the oldest images in Christian thought: the tree of the Fall answered by the tree of the Cross, dead wood that puts out leaves again on the third day. Folk carvers and metalworkers across Europe and the Americas returned to it constantly, and this crucifix belongs to that family, where the foliage is not decoration but the entire argument of the piece.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
