The Thistle and Sword Cross is a cross built out of a sword. The hilt forms the upper arm, the blade runs down past the crossing to a point at the foot, and long thistle leaves with one full thistle head twine around the lower shaft. At the centre a raised oval medallion holds a veiled figure in profile with a small child's head below her shoulder.
Sword and thistle together are the signature of Lorraine, where the thistle is the emblem of the duchy and of Nancy, its motto warning that no one handles it without being pricked. The pairing turns a weapon into an act of faith: the blade of a soldier reshaped into the sign of the Crucified, softened by a flowering weed that defends itself and asks nothing. At the crossing, where the two arms meet, a mother and her child keep watch over the whole design.
