The Vintage Bronze St. Valentine Heart Medal is cut as a heart, and the shape is the point of it. Within it, against a field of finely engraved rays, sits the bust of a bishop in his mitre with a crozier resting at his shoulder, bearded and looking straight out, his name arcing overhead in raised capitals: SAINT VALENTINE. Both sides carry the same design.
Valentine was martyred at Rome in the third century and buried on the Flaminian Way, and his feast on the fourteenth of February has carried his name into every language as a word for human love. The older devotion asks him for something steadier: he is invoked by engaged couples and for happy marriages, and against epilepsy and fainting. A small ITALY mark at the base of the design records where the antique original was made.
The medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
