The Vintage Bronze St. Michael Openwork Rosary Center puts the Archangel at the heart of the rosary. Michael stands in a short tunic with his wings spread wide, one arm lifted with the sword above his head and a shield carried at his side, and the ring around him is filled with pierced scrolling vine, buds and small berries, so the figure is read against the light.
Michael is the defender: the one who casts down the dragon in the Book of Revelation, the angel the Church has invoked in every century against evil, in battle and at the hour of death. The handling here is frankly folk, with a broad face, sturdy legs and ornament laid on by a free hand, and that warmth is much of its charm.
