The Vintage Bronze St. Martin de Porres Openwork Medal is pierced on either side of the figure, so the saint stands framed by two arcs of open ground. He wears the hooded habit of a Dominican lay brother, haloed, a crucifix held at his breast, and beside him, set upright as though just put down, is his broom.
Every detail around his feet names him. A dog and a smaller animal sit together on one side, a rodent crosses the ground on the other, and a bird perches on the frame above. Martin de Porres swept the friary at Lima, nursed the sick and fed the poor of the city, and the old story of the dog, the cat and the mouse sharing one bowl at his word is why the animals are all gathered here at once. He is the patron of those whose work goes unnoticed.
