The Vintage Bronze St. George and the Dragon Medal holds a whole scene inside its oval field. A rider on a rearing horse drives his lance downward into a dragon writhing beneath the hooves, with rocks and a low landscape filling the ground behind, the whole set within a pierced border of scrolled leaves and open lobes.
George was a soldier of the Roman army who died for the faith at Lydda, and the dragon he is shown killing became the Church's plainest picture of courage against evil — the one who rides at the thing everyone else has fled. He is patron of soldiers and of England, Portugal and Catalonia, and this Spanish original gives him the deep relief and crowded ground that Spanish medalists loved. Long wear has left the surfaces smooth and rubbed, and the reproduction keeps that softness.
