The Vintage Bronze St. Catherine and St. Barbara Octagonal Medal pairs two of the great virgin martyrs, one to each face. Catherine is seated crowned in profile with a rayed nimbus and the martyr's palm across her lap; Barbara kneels in a rocky landscape beside a battlemented tower, a palm branch rising behind her.
The tower is Barbara's own, the one her father shut her in, and she is kept as patroness of those whose work carries sudden danger. Catherine of Alexandria confounded fifty philosophers with her learning and has been claimed ever since by teachers and students; both saints have long been invoked for a good death. The legends name them, S· CATHARINA · OR· P· N·, Saint Catherine, pray for us, and S· BARBARA. The cut octagonal form and small crisp lettering are the mark of eighteenth-century colonial work.
The medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
