Product Details

The Vintage Bronze St. Agatha Medal is cut as a four-lobed quatrefoil with leafwork filling the petals and the saint given the round centre. She stands frontally, crowned and haloed, holding a palm and raised above a stepped and railed platform, modelled not from life but from a shrine statue on its bier, the way she is carried through the streets on her feast.

The reverse is lettered in five clear lines: S. AGATA / VERGINE E MARTIRE / RICORDO — St. Agatha, Virgin and Martyr, a keepsake. Agatha was martyred at Catania in the third century after refusing a Roman official, and her breasts were cut away in the course of it. She has been invoked ever since by women facing breast disease, by nurses, and against fire and eruption, the last because her veil was carried against the lava of Etna. The palm in her hand is the martyr's palm, the sign of a victory won by refusing to yield.

The St. Agatha medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the medal's vintage character.

  • Made in the USA
  • Artisan-cast from an antique original
  • Finished by hand, so every piece is subtly unique.
  • Buy the medal alone, or add an optional chain or cord necklace
  • Add a cord or chain to have it arrive assembled and ready to wear
  • Arrives in a deluxe velour jewelry box
