The Vintage Bronze Squared Openwork Crucifix is built on squared, architectural lines. The arms are broad and flat-ended rather than tapered, pierced through with openwork panels and edged with fine beaded bands, and each of the four terminals opens into a crisp fleur-de-lis. Set into the field behind the head is a small quatrefoil cross.
The effect is formal and rather grand for the size: the openwork keeps the piece light and lets whatever is behind it show through, while the beading gives every edge a definite line. The corpus is modelled with the head fallen to the right and the body drawn long, in the manner of nineteenth-century European work, and the fleur-de-lis at the four ends is the old French sign of the Virgin, set to keep watch at the corners of her son's cross.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
