The Vintage Bronze Spanish Shrine Madonna Medal is a piece of architecture in miniature. Two spiral-twisted columns carry a round arch crowned with rays, a small rampant beast perched at either corner, and beneath the arch stands a crowned Madonna in the stiff, bell-shaped mantle of a dressed shrine statue. A bar runs below her, and from it hangs a small shield-shaped cartouche with a second figure in relief. The whole reproduces the niche in which such a Virgin would have stood.
The antique original is an eighteenth-century Spanish medal of Nuestra Señora del Sagrario, Our Lady of the Shrine, honoured as patroness of Toledo, whose image has been kept in the cathedral there for centuries and carried through the city on her feast. Nothing is lettered on the medal itself; the architecture does the naming, as it did for every pilgrim who brought one home.
The Spanish shrine Madonna medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the medal’s vintage character.
