Product Details

Everything about the Vintage Bronze Spanish Colonial Southwest Crucifix is direct. The four arms swell into rounded club-shaped ends, a small cap sits above the head, and there is no other ornament at all. The corpus is broad and frankly cut, the arms bent up, the ribs marked with a few strokes, the loincloth folded in three or four planes. Nothing has been refined away.

That plainness is the point, and it belongs to the long Spanish colonial tradition of the Southwest, where devotional objects were made locally and by hand for households rather than for churches. The nineteenth-century original came out of southern New Mexico, from a world in which a crucifix hung by the door or went in a pocket to the fields, and was handled until the edges softened. It is a crucifix of the people, and it has the confidence of work made to be used rather than admired.

The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.

  • Made in the USA
  • Artisan-cast from an antique original
  • Finished by hand, so every piece is subtly unique.
  • Buy the medal alone, or add an optional chain or cord necklace
  • Add a cord or chain to have it arrive assembled and ready to wear
  • Arrives in a deluxe velour jewelry box
