The arms of the Small Spanish Colonial Cross are modelled as cut branches, bark and grain and all, with a full rosette blooming where they meet and the lower limb tapering to a leafy point.
It belongs to the old family of living-tree crosses, in which the wood of the cross is shown budding into flower, the tree of death made the tree of life. The form travelled with the missionaries and took deep root in the Spanish colonies, where crosses like this one were cast in small workshops from Mexico to Peru through the eighteenth century and worn hard by the people who owned them. This reproduction keeps the softened edges and slightly uneven surface that such wear produces, and at 1 3/8 inches it is an easy size to wear every day.
The Spanish colonial cross was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the cross's vintage character.
