The Vintage Bronze Small Openwork Crucifix is a light, airy piece in which as much is cut away as is left. Each arm ends in a pierced open trefoil, a scrolled ring of openwork loops around the crossing, and another open loop finishes the foot of the shaft, so the cross is drawn in outline as much as in solid metal. The surface between is strewn with fine raised dots.
The corpus is slender and quietly modelled, the arms lifted, the head bowed. It is the moment the Church returns to more often than any other, held here without drama and at a size meant for constant company rather than display. The trefoils that finish each arm are an old sign of the Trinity, three lobes at every point of the cross, and the pierced work lets light through the whole piece so that it changes as it moves.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
