The Vintage Bronze Small Lilies Crucifix is light and pierced, set with small lilies. One opens at the end of each arm, another rises through the foot, and a raised bud sits at the crossing just above the head of the corpus, where a fan of fine rays spreads across the upright. The piercing between the flowers keeps the whole cross airy at an inch and a half.
The lily belongs to purity and to the Annunciation, the flower Gabriel holds when he comes to Mary, and a cross grown over with lilies is a quiet way of setting the Passion beside the promise that opened it. The idea is older than this piece by centuries: medieval artists drew the cross as a living tree in flower, the dead wood breaking into bloom because of what happened on it.
