The Vintage Bronze Skull and Crossbones Crucifix is tall and slender, its arms cast as rough knotted timbers rather than smooth bars. A burst of rays spreads behind the head of Christ, a crown-like crest sits above the top arm, and the corpus is modelled long and thin in the older European manner. Below the feet, set into the shaft, is a small skull with crossed bones.
That skull is Golgotha, the place of the skull, and by old tradition the grave of Adam lying directly beneath the cross, so that the blood of the second Adam falls upon the first. It is one of the oldest images in Christian art and one of the most consoling: death shown underfoot, with the death that undoes it standing over. At nearly two and a half inches this is a striking devotional crucifix with real weight in the hand.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
