The Vintage Bronze Simple Crucifix leaves out everything except what is necessary. The arms are flat and squared with no ornament at the terminals, the surface is very lightly textured, and all the attention falls on the corpus, modelled loosely and almost sketched, with the head fallen to one side and the knees turned. A small scrolled titulus rides above the head.
Plain crucifixes of this kind were the ordinary ones. They were carried in a pocket, laid in a hand at a sickbed, and sold by the hundred at shrine doors and parish gates to people with no interest in owning anything fine. That is their particular dignity: nothing here is decorative, and nothing stands between the eye and the figure. Bronze warms and darkens with handling, so a crucifix like this one only looks better the longer it is used.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
