The Vintage Bronze Seven Sorrows Medal shows the Virgin veiled and haloed, her hands folded low and her face drawn, with seven swords driven fanwise into the small flaming heart at her breast. The reverse turns to the Crucifixion, Christ on the cross with two mourning figures fallen at its foot, worked in fine detail for so small a field.
The two Latin legends answer one another. MATER DOLOROSA, Mother of Sorrows, names the seven griefs of her life, foretold when Simeon told her in the Temple that a sword would pierce her own soul also. IN CRUCE SALUS, in the Cross is salvation, is the reply given on the other face, the reason her sorrow was not wasted. Worn together they make an inch-wide medal into a small meditation rather than a single image, and the Seven Sorrows devotion has for centuries been the one people turn to when they are grieving something themselves.
