The arms of the Vintage Bronze Scrolled Crucifix with Sunburst widen as they go and finish in notched, leaf-filled ends, each one packed with scrolling volutes. Behind the head of the corpus a fan of fine rays opens like a small sunburst, and a palmette rises through the foot to close the design. The corpus is smooth and slightly elongated, which keeps it legible against the busy ground.
The sunburst does the work an inscription might otherwise do. Rays behind the head mark Christ as the light of the cross, the reading the Church has always given to the darkness at noon on Good Friday and the light that answered it on Easter morning, and it is a device that turns up again and again in nineteenth-century devotional metalwork. Set against the dense scrollwork of the arms, the plain figure and the clean fan of rays give the eye somewhere to rest, which is precisely what a crucifix meant for daily prayer needs.
The scrolled crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
