The Vintage Bronze Scallop Shell Crucifix is tall and slender, ending at each of its three outer points in a fluted scallop shell, ribbed and fanned out from the shaft. Between them the arms are left plain so the shape carries itself, and the corpus is small and lightly modelled, set well up on the long lower limb.
The scallop is the oldest badge of pilgrimage in Christian Europe, sewn to the hat or cloak of anyone who had walked to Santiago de Compostela and worn ever since as the sign of a journey made on foot. Set at the ends of a cross, it makes a piece for someone who understands faith as something walked rather than held still, and a fitting companion for a pilgrimage, a Lent, or any long stretch of road.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
