The Vintage Bronze Santo Nino de Atocha Medal shows the Holy Child seated as a pilgrim, in a wide plumed hat and short cape with a halo behind him. In one hand he holds the pilgrim staff with its gourd of water; in the other he carries a small basket. The words STO. NIÑO DE ATOCHA arch across the top of the field, the Holy Child of Atocha.
The devotion grew from a Spanish story of a child who came to the prison gates with bread and water and fed everyone inside without the basket ever emptying. It travelled with Spanish settlers to Mexico and the Southwest, where the Santo Niño is beloved as the helper of prisoners, travelers, the sick and anyone in sudden danger. Pilgrims still walk to Plateros and Chimayo to ask his help. The relief here is cut unusually deep, with the brim of the hat and the folds of the cape standing clear of the field.
This medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
