On the Vintage Bronze Sacred Heart Scrollwork Crucifix, a flaming Sacred Heart takes the place a lettered tablet usually holds. It sits directly above the corpus with a small cross rising from it, and the crossbar to either side is filled with fine horizontal wave lines that read as radiance spreading outward. The arms and the foot finish in generous curled scrollwork.
The exchange is deliberate. Rather than naming Christ by Pilate’s title, this cross names him by his heart, so that the instrument of the Passion and the emblem of the love that accepted it stand in a single line. Devotion to the Sacred Heart, as it was given to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque at Paray-le-Monial, has always insisted on that connection: the wounded heart is not a symbol set beside the cross but the reason for it. No lettering appears anywhere on the piece.
