The Vintage Bronze Russian Orthodox Cross with Saints is a substantial body cross of the old type, made to be worn beneath the clothing rather than over it. The arms end in rounded quatrefoil lobes and the entire ground is granulated, a pebbled texture against which the figures stand out bright. At the crossing of one face is the Crucifixion, the body slight against the drawn-in arms of the cross, with half-length haloed saints filling each of the four lobes.
The other face shows a standing figure with arms outstretched in the ancient posture of prayer, ringed again by saints in the lobes. A cross of this kind was given at baptism in Russia and worn for a lifetime, close to the skin, gathering the whole company of heaven around the one who wore it. The piece is dense, quiet and handsomely worked throughout.
This Russian Orthodox cross was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the cross's vintage character.
