The Vintage Bronze Rose Bud Bead Cap and Dangle is a rosebud modelled fully in the round, no more than half an inch across, its petals furled over one another around a closed centre with a small calyx of leaves gathered at the base. Seen from above it is a spiral; seen from the side it is a bud still holding itself shut.
The rose is Mary's flower in Christian art, and the rosary takes its very name from the garland of roses offered to her. A bud carries a meaning of its own, closed rather than opened, something promised rather than something finished, which is why buds turn up so often on devotional pieces made for the young. Each one comes out of the mould a little different, the petal edges catching the antiquing unevenly, so no two shade quite the same way. Small pieces like this are usually what make a finished rosary look considered rather than assembled.
