The Vintage Bronze Primitive Figural Crucifix is unlike anything else in the line. There is no cross behind the figure: the outstretched arms of Christ are the crossbeam, tapering to points at either end, and the body falls straight into the shaft below. Ribs, loincloth and the fall of the head are cut in a handful of blunt strokes, and the surface is left rough and pitted rather than smoothed.
The effect is severe and very old, closer to a forged object than a cast one, and it belongs to the long tradition of folk crucifixes made where a carver's hand mattered more than a workshop's polish. Stripped of ornament, of lettering and of frame, it says one thing only, and says it plainly: the body of Christ given on the cross.
This crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
