The Vintage Bronze Pierced Scallop Shell Pendant is a generous shell, ribbed deep from the hinge out to a frilled and undulating edge, with a small volute curling in at either side. Five round openings are pierced through the lower part of the shell, and where they cross the ribs the metal reads almost as lace.
The scallop is the pilgrim's badge. It has been worn on the road to Compostela and the shrine of St. James for the better part of a thousand years, and it served as a baptismal emblem long before that, the shell being the thing water is poured from. Nothing here is lettered, which leaves the shell to say what a shell has always said: that the one carrying it is on the way somewhere.
The Pierced Scallop Shell Pendant was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the pendant's vintage character.
