The Vintage Bronze Passion Rosary Center is a small heart carrying a face on each side. One holds the Virgin, veiled and turned slightly aside with her head bowed, the Mother of Sorrows. The other holds the head of Christ facing forward under the crown of thorns, the hair falling heavily on either side. Both fill their little field almost to the edge, which is what gives so small a piece its force.
The pairing is the whole statement: mother and Son held on opposite sides of one heart, which is exactly how the sorrowful mysteries hold them. Simeon told Mary that a sword would pierce her own soul too, and the devotion to her sorrows has always understood her grief as bound up with his suffering rather than standing apart from it. A center like this belongs on a rosary prayed through the Passion, or on a set kept for Lent and Good Friday, where the images meet the prayers being said on the beads.
