On the Vintage Bronze Pansy Crucifix the cross itself flowers. Each of the four arms ends in a wide pansy blossom, a further flower and its leaves climb the foot, and the corpus at the center is held within a growing plant. The modelling is soft and rounded, the way a well-handled cross becomes over years of use.
Flowering crosses were a favourite of nineteenth-century devotional casting, where the blossom stands for life rising out of the Passion, the dead wood breaking into bloom. The pansy carried a meaning of its own as well: its French name, pensee, means a thought, and the flower was long given as a token of remembrance, which suits a cross meant to be held during prayer. Nothing on the piece is lettered, and the whole of its meaning is carried in the form.
The pansy crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
