The Orthodox Form Crucifix with Figures follows an Eastern pattern quite unlike the Latin crucifixes beside it. Christ is shown living and upright in a long belted tunic rather than stripped and slumped, his arms following the flat bar of the cross. A bust turns inward from the end of each arm, a further scene is set into the panel above the crossbar, and the shaft below the feet is cut with wavy lines.
Eastern Christianity has always shown the crucifixion this way, not as a death being suffered but as a victory being won, Christ reigning from the cross with his eyes open. The busts at the ends of the arms are the witnesses who kept watch there, the Mother of God and Saint John, set where the Church has always placed them. It is an older and more triumphant reading of the same moment.
The Orthodox form crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the crucifix's vintage character.
