The Vintage Bronze Ornate Rayed Crucifix is the largest and most worked cross of its group. The arms finish in pointed almond-shaped lobes filled with a stippled ground and edged with cast leaves, the shaft carries the same treatment down to a long pointed drop at the foot, and every surface is either worked or textured.
Behind the head of the corpus a scrolled cartouche opens with fine rays breaking out of it, a small radiance set exactly where the titulus would ordinarily be, so that the glory takes the place of the charge against him. The corpus is modelled at full length and in high relief. The scrollwork and leaf ornament belong to nineteenth-century Europe, when devotional metalwork was expected to be as generous as a church interior, and a cross of this size was made to be seen.
The ornate rayed crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the cross's vintage character.
