The Vintage Bronze Openwork Madonna Medal carries the veiled head of Our Lady in strict profile, her face calm and almost unmodelled, ringed by an octagonal border pierced into irregular faceted cells that open right through the metal. The veil falls in long plain folds and the disc behind the head is left smooth.
Nothing on the medal is lettered. It relies on outline and negative space instead, which is unusual in Marian medalwork and gives this small piece an architectural quality, like a rose window brought down to the size of a hand. The severity suits its subject: Mary shown without crown or ornament, known by the veil alone.
