The field of the Vintage Bronze Openwork Ecce Homo Rosary Center is cut away to either side, so the figure within is held in a ring of open metal. Christ is shown half-length, crowned with thorns and with the head inclined, a nimbus of fine rays behind him, a fold of drapery drawn across the top like a canopy and a spray of leaves gathered below.
It is the moment the old devotional books called Ecce Homo, behold the man, the words Pilate spoke when he brought Jesus out scourged and crowned before the crowd. Centers of this kind were made to sit lightly in a rosary, catching the light through the voids as the beads move, and the openwork gives the scene an unusual quietness: the figure is surrounded by air rather than pressed into a solid disc, and the eye goes straight to the bowed head.
