The Vintage Bronze Openwork Crucifix with Buds is nearly as much air as metal. Pierced buds and fleur-de-lis open at each arm end, a small crown of leaves rises above the head, and a rosette is worked into the crossing behind the corpus, which hangs long and slender at the center.
The short titulus above the head carries INRI, the abbreviation of Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. Pilate meant the words as a charge; the Church has kept them as a proclamation, and they have appeared above nearly every crucifix made since. The buds and leaves filling the arms say the same thing in another language, the dead wood of the cross breaking into flower, an image the medieval hymns return to again and again.
The openwork crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the cross's vintage character.
