The Vintage Bronze Open Scrollwork Navette Dangle is a pointed oval filled edge to edge with pierced scrollwork. C-scrolls and small volutes crowd in from either side toward an open leaf-shaped void at the center, and a narrow raised border runs the whole way around. So much of the metal is cut away that light passes through the piece from any angle.
There is no figure and no lettering here, and that is the whole point of it. This scroll vocabulary comes out of the same European workshops that produced the medals and rosary centers of the period, where a pierced ornament was used to open up a heavy design and give the eye somewhere to rest. It sits comfortably beside a devotional piece without introducing a second subject, and it is handsome enough to stand on its own.
The Open Scrollwork Navette was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the piece's vintage character.
