This is the old Russian body-cross, worn under the clothing rather than over it. The arms flare into leaf-shaped terminals and the foot broadens into a spade, with a raised three-bar cross at the center and the lance and the sponge on its reed crossed behind the shaft. Panels of Church Slavonic lettering fill the arms, the field and the foot, cast small and shallow in the manner of the originals.
The three bars are the Russian form: the title plaque above, the arms themselves, and the slanted footrest below, tilted toward the thief who repented. The lance and the sponge are the instruments of the Passion, set behind the cross as they are in every Orthodox crucifixion. Crosses like this were given at baptism and worn against the skin for a lifetime, which is why the type is so dense with text and so plain in outline. At two and an eighth inches it has real presence, and the antiqued finish settles into the lettering and lifts the raised work.
