The Vintage Bronze Old Caravaca Cross with Angels takes the two-barred form of Caravaca, one of the most recognizable devotional shapes in the Spanish world. Christ is crucified on the lower bar, the upper bar and the flared arm ends are filled with fine scrollwork, two winged angels kneel below turned inward toward the shaft, and a small skull rests at the foot as the reminder of Golgotha.
The cross takes its name from Caravaca de la Cruz in Murcia, where a relic of the True Cross has been venerated since the thirteenth century and carried in procession each May. The angels belong to the story: they are said to have brought the cross to the town, and Spanish makers have shown them holding it ever since. The reverse is worked as fully as the front, a standing robed figure on the shaft in place of the corpus, so the cross reads well whichever way it turns.
The cross was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
