The Vintage Bronze Modernist Crucifix is the boldest piece in this group. Cross and corpus are cast as a single form: the arms sweep upward into sharp pointed terminals with the hands worked at their ends, and the body below narrows into long tapering planes that run down to a plain foot. There is no crossbar as such, no titulus and no halo — only the figure, abstracted almost to a symbol.
Work like this belongs to the mid-century revival that ran through European church art, when sculptors stripped the crucifix back toward its Romanesque and Gothic roots and let the material carry the feeling. What is left is the upward sweep of the arms, which reads at once as agony and as ascent. It is a crucifix for someone who wants the subject with no decorative word around it.
