The Madonna and Child medal keeps the outline of the figure it copies. The Virgin sits wrapped in a deep hooded mantle strewn all over with small raised stars, her face turned out toward the wearer, the Child held upright against her right side with one hand raised, and the lower edge of the medal follows the fall of her robe rather than closing into a circle.
The starred mantle is old Marian shorthand. It comes from the woman clothed with the sun in the Book of Revelation, crowned with twelve stars, and it says without a word that the mother in this image is also the queen of heaven. Her face turned outward does the other half of the work, meeting the eye of whoever is holding her, while the Child raises his hand in blessing over the same person. Every star catches the antiquing a little differently, so the surface changes as it moves.
The Madonna and Child medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the medal's vintage character.
