The Vintage Bronze Lyon a Marie Medal is cast in the shape of a small shrine, with scrolled shoulders and a carved palmette at the foot. The Virgin stands at the center, veiled and crowned, her hands lowered and open in the familiar attitude of grace being poured out, two tall church towers rising behind her shoulders and a lion lying full length and calm on the ledge at her feet.
The banner across the base reads LYON A MARIE, Lyon to Mary. The lion is the emblem of the city, and the piece belongs to the long tradition by which Lyon has placed itself under the Virgin's protection. That devotion is kept on the hill of Fourviere, where the people of the city vowed a church in thanksgiving for deliverance and still light candles in their windows for her every December. Few medals carry a whole city's promise so plainly.
