On the Vintage Bronze Lotus Openwork Crucifix the cross behind the corpus opens outward into pierced petals, so that Christ appears to rest at the heart of a flower. The tracery carries the eye inward to the figure, the deep antiqued finish leaves the raised petal edges bright while the recesses stay dark, and the lower arm tapers to a pointed drop finished with a small bead.
Above the head is a scrolled titulus lettered INRI, the Latin Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum — Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews — the charge Pilate ordered fixed to the cross and the oldest inscription in Christian art. The flowering cross around it belongs to an equally old habit of thought, in which the instrument of death is drawn as something in bloom, because of what came of it three days later.
The lotus crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
